Historical Virginia at a Glance

As the 10th state to be inducted into the US, the name of this 42,769 square mile state originated in honor of England’s “Virgin Queen” (Elizabeth I).

Virginia is also part of the 13 original colonies (10th), which were the battlegrounds of half of the civil war battles that happened during the civil war period. A total 2,200 over the 4000 battles were fought within the state. It is also home to the United States Navy’s Atlantic Fleet

By numbers the state was the birthplace of 6 wives of our 6 former presidents (Martha Washington, Martha Jefferson, Rachel Jackson, Letitia Tyler, Ellen Arthur, Edith Wilson), burial place of 7 of our former presidents (Washington, Jefferson, Monroe, Madison, Kennedy, Tyler, and Taft), and the birthplace of 8 of our former presidents (Washington, Jefferson, Monroe, Madison, Tyler, Harrison, Wilson, and Taylor).

Indeed, the state is integral to American history and culture.

    • History

Established in 1980 Larry O'Toole founded Gentle Giant with a friends borrowed truck and a $17 investment: a one-time ad in the Boston Phoenix. O'Toole felt strongly that Massachusetts sorely needed an infusion of quality into the moving industry, and in 1984 committed himself fully to that mission. As noted in the company mission statement, written by O'Toole himself, "We treat our employees with respect and compassion, and expect that they will extend the same courtesy to our customers".He prides himself and the company in being able to step in and complete difficult moves with enthusiasm after Gentle Giant's competitors have quit the job in frustration. His efforts have been rewarded, since O'Toole has been recognized for his excellence in leadership by The United States Small Business Administration as its 2004 Massachusetts Small Business Person of the Year and The Cambridge Chamber of Commerce as its 2004 Business Person of the Year.

    • Meet the Business Owner: Larry O.

A native of Ireland and 1973 engineering graduate of Northeastern University, where he rowed competitively, Larry O'Toole was a rising executive at Eaton Corporation when he quit his job to "escape corporate slavery" and pursue his writing interests while investigating the possibilities of starting a light manufacturing company. On a quest for start-up cash, the 6 foot 6 inch O'Toole - the original Gentle Giant - was urged by his friends to add moving to his list of odd jobs.In his mid-fifties, O'Toole is as fit as most of his staff, many of whom are elite athletes in their own right. He won his division in 1991 and 2006 and finished in the top five over ten times at the CRASH-B World indoor rowing championships. Intrigued by any competitive situation, O'Toole leads new employees in "running the stadium," which involves scaling 37 sets of stairs at Harvard University's roman-style coliseum.
