5 Things You Must Sell Before the Move

Are you preparing for to change houses? If so then you must immediately start going over what you own in order to determine which ones are keepers and which ones need to go. But before you start throwing away your belongings, take note that there is a better way to go about it – SELLING.

To give you a better idea, here is a list of the top five (5) things you must sell before the big day:

1. Big, bulky furniture
   It’s never a good thing to be too attached to material things, especially if they’re big, bulky furniture. You should only hang on to furniture pieces if they are family heirlooms or priceless antiques. Otherwise, sell that old table or leave your couch. Chances are, buying yourself a new one will be more economical than paying for the item to be packed and shipped to your new address.
2. Old books
   People rarely go over the books that they’ve already finished. (Okay, unless you’re a die-hard Harry Potter fan) So if you have books that you’ve already finished enjoying, sell it to someone who can read it anew. The same goes for children’s story books or college reference materials. Put them to good use and make some money out of it too.
3. Kitchen supplies
   If you still have a lot of stock kitchen supplies in your cupboard then you should probably sell them to your neighbours. Movers are not allowed to transport cleaning detergents and other chemicals so you’ll only waste your time trying to pack these things.
4. Old appliances
   Do you really need to hang on to your VCR? The same goes for television sets, kitchen appliances, washing machines, etc. Technology keeps evolving away, so you might as well get some extra cash to purchase an updated version of it.
5. Things that won’t fit into your new home
   Before you leave, make sure to properly measure each room in your new home (height, width, etc.). Then, look over your possessions and figure out if everything will fit into your new place. This is especially applicable for condo-owners and apartment renters.

Tips on Setting-up a Yard Sale of Garage Sale

Aside from being a good source of extra cash, a garage sale can also be a good way to bond with your family. It’s also a great way to inform your neighbors that you’ll be moving out soon. Let’s get started on your big moving out sale by listing down a few tips in setting up:

• Pick a location – You can have it done literally in your garage or by the street in front of your house. Others pick more pedestrian-friendly locations where more people can see their goods. You can have it at your local neighbourhood park or maybe a friend’s house. Either way, it’s all about the location and the target market.
• Ask for permission – If you live in a fancy neighbourhood, it may be a good idea to ask for permission from the homeowners first.
• Plan the time of day – What’s the best time and date for you to put up a shop? Most people schedule their garage sales during weekends because that’s when more people are actually at home and away from their places of work.
• Where to place your product – Will you be using foldable tables? Will you use a coat rack to hang your bags? What about small items that need to be placed in display boxes? Browse around your house and find these pieces ahead of time.
• Figure out the price of each item – Determine the price you want for each item before putting them on display. You should also take note that people will most probably try to haggle for the price so set price ceilings and floor prices. If you’re going to be manning the sale with your family or friends, they should also have an idea of the prices too. If you want to put actual price tags then that’s perfectly fine too.
• Who will handle the accounting? – It may be a good idea to have just one person do the accounting (getting payments and giving change). That way, you have control over the money. You should also prepare smaller bills and coins ahead of time so you can have change for the purchases.

Remember, not only will you be saving up on packing and moving expenses, selling unwanted or irrelevant items is a really good way to earn some extra cash. Plus it’ll feel good to start your new life with some new things, so you better start making room. Out with the old and in with the new.
