Moving trucks are often synonymous with moving. When you see moving trucks rolling along the road, you instantly think, “Oh, looks like someone’s moving from their homes.” But if you look closely, moving trucks differ in terms of size. The question is, how does one determine what size of moving truck is needed for their move?

Trucks are Measured in Cubic Feet

Rental trucks are usually classified depending on how much they can carry inside their containers. This often measured in cubic feet. This measurement depends on the entire space inside the truck’s storage area- from floor to roof, and wall to wall. Take note however, that unless you’re an expert packer, you won’t be able to fill every bit of space inside the truck. So as a precaution, make sure to choose a truck with space that’s slightly larger than your original estimate.

It Depends on How Much You Own

Aside from the very specific and scientific measurements in cubic feet, rental companies also give out estimates like: a 20-cubic foot truck = 3 rooms of furniture. But then again, these are just rough estimates which are based on the typical size of rooms with the most basic furniture inside. For example, one sofa set for a living room and a couple of cabinets. In the end it will boil down to how much things you own, because you might have more or less than the calculated average.

Here is a sample guide for truck size capacity:

• 10 cubic feet =  1studio or small 1-bedroom apartment
• 14 cubic feet = 1-2 bedrooms
• 17 cubic feet = 2-3 bedrooms
• 24 cubic feet = 3-4 bedrooms
• 26 cubic feet = 4 bedrooms
